Pori Jazz in a nutshell
Pori Jazz is the pioneer of the Finnish festival summer. The daring idea of organizing a jazz festival was born among the jazz enthusiasts and musicians in 1960's and the first Pori Jazz was held in July 1966. This was the beginning to Pori Jazz Festivals and also to the Finnish festival summer. From the very small start the festival and audiences have grown year by year. The first festival was based on acoustic jazz but little by little electric jazz and other rhythm music, blues, soul, funk, hip-hop and the rich Cuban and Brazilian music took foot.

Now Pori Jazz offers a broad contingent of the world's leading artists ranging from long-established figures to up-and-coming stars. Pori Jazz has managed to keep in the lead among international festivals for already over 40 years. The festival atmosphere in particular, created by the music, people, fine services and unique milieu, is second to none. The big open-air concerts are held at the beautiful concert park Kirjurinluoto Arena and the various jazz clubs come to life at nightfall.

At the moment Pori Jazz Festival is one of the most well known and most popular summer events in Finland with about 120.000-160.000 listeners every year. It is also the biggest summer event in Finland. The festival visitors appreciate the atmosphere, performers and program policy and for the majority of the visitors, the festival has become an experience they want to repeat every summer.

Pori Jazz is the spiritual leader of its field. The purpose of the festival is to support and promote jazz music and broaden the interest of jazz. The mission is to produce an artistically top-level music festival and to create a unique experience for the guests, artists and voluntary workers of the festival.

The festival is arranged yearly in July by a non-profit association Pori Jazz (Pori Jazz 66 association). About 70 per cent of the program is admission free.
