Helmi Antila Quartet
Winner of Teosto’s New Sounds campaign at Pori Jazz
Helmi Antila Quartet is a four-piece band made up of young, technically accomplished musicians with a strong musical identity. The group is known for its sound, in which the airiness and sensitivity of jazz meet modern songwriting in a way that feels at once fresh, touching, and timeless. The quartet performs Finnish-language songs composed and written by singer-songwriter Helmi Antila, where honest personal expression intertwines with a rich harmonic texture. In addition to Antila, the lineup features vibraphonist Mikko Antila, drummer Mooses Kuloniemi, and double bassist Tuomo Purhonen.
In the New Sounds campaign, Teosto and the Finnish festivals Provinssi, Pori Jazz, and John Smith Rock Festival search for the future names of Finnish music. From a record-breaking 5,800 public submissions, three new artists were selected to perform at next summer’s festivals. Chosen by the jury, Saga Mast (Provinssi), Helmi Antila Quartet (Pori Jazz), and St. Aurora (John Smith) bring new energy and a strong individual voice to the stage. The aim of the New Sounds campaign is to strengthen the vitality of Finnish music and create space for fresh voices. Now in its third year, the campaign highlights music creators who are renewing the music scene and building the future of Finnish music.
